This email is principally for NTEU Members at CDER, NTEU Officers and Stewards: A number of CDER members contacted me today about a story running on NBC/Channel 4's website pertaining to, "leaking cylinders on Federal Land," specifically the White Oak Federal Research Center. I've been in touch with Ernie Lunsford, Project Manager for White Oak. Here is his reply (at 3:15 pm today): "Bernice, The incident is well to the east of our site, in what the Navy calls the "300 area." Preliminary indication is that the materials are old compressed gas cylinders. The Hazmat team is still investigating." I have since learned that the site in question is about one mile from where our buildings stand, in the back of the property where the Navy still operates. The Navy has been in touch with Chapter 282's representative on the National Environmental Safety and Health Committee (NESHC), Paul DeLeo, Ph.D. They have explained basically the same information above and will keep in touch with Paul as matters become clearer. Montgomery County HazMat teams are investigating. They are fully equipped to handle this and make assessments. What you can do: FDA leadership, the safety and health teams, the project manager and NTEU 282 leadership are working together to bring you correct and timely information. If you have a question or concern, or if you've heard a disturbing rumor, please contact one (or all) of the following NTEU representatives: Bernice Friedlander, Mike Theodorakis, Paul DeLeo. Each is listed in the HHS/FDA email directory. You will receive a timely and accurate response. Feel free to share this with your colleagues. We will also post updates on our website - www.nteu282.org. Thank you for your cooperation. Bernice
