The Participant’s Guide

 

OBJECTIVES: By the end of this class you will able to:

1. List the "eight faces of a steward" and how each role contributes to the local Chapter.

2. Discuss what an individual steward and the larger union do for members and employees.

WHAT DOES THE UNION DO and WHO DOES IT?

Take a look at the attached organizational chart of the union’s national office. Identify which national office department does each of the things listed below. At the same time, try to identify which positions in the local union handle the task, e.g., chapter president, chief steward, steward, board members, director, etc.

1. A bill was proposed to increase the federal retirement age and we need to lobby against it.

2. The President ordered all federal employees to be drug tested at the whim of the managers and we need to protect those employees selected.

3. A law passed prohibiting federal employees from being paid for some outside work and we have to work out a detailed agreement with management as to what will be allowed and what will be prohibited.

4. A member of Congress blurted out on TV that he wanted to blow up the IRS and we need to change the public’s image of IRS and federal employees in general.
